Prepare for discovery
Research helps a host ask informed questions. It should not turn the guest into a person reading answers from a form. Identify a central question, understand the guest’s relevant work, and note where you need clarification. Bring a route into the conversation, while leaving room for an unexpected but useful turn.
Ask for the moment behind the claim
When someone describes a broad lesson, invite a specific example. What happened? What choice did they face? What changed after they acted? Concrete detail gives the listener something to examine. It also helps separate a guest’s personal experience from a general claim that would need independent evidence.
Let the answer change the next question
Listen for language that deserves a follow-up. A contradiction, an unfamiliar term, or a surprising consequence can be more valuable than the next item on your prepared list. Clarify respectfully. An interview can be warm and still ask a guest to explain the limits of what they know.
Serve the person listening
The audience cannot see your research notes. Introduce essential context, explain abbreviations, and reconnect a long answer to the episode’s central question. A concise ending can name what was explored and direct listeners to verified resources. The goal is a useful conversation, not a performance of how much the host prepared.
