Episode description and notes

After spending 18 years as a teacher and 17 years as a chemical researcher, Paul Burgmayer now dedicates much of his retirement to the practice of spiritual direction. Rooted in traditions dating back to the fourth and fifth centuries, spiritual direction began as a deeply personal, one-on-one form of mentorship, often practiced within religious communities. Interest grew rapidly during the 1970s, creating a need for more trained spiritual directors and inspiring the development of formal training programs. In his book, Paul highlights five pioneering programs that emerged between the early 1970s and 1978, followed by a second generation of programs modeled after them. From those original five, the field has expanded to at least 81 spiritual direction training programs across the United States and Canada, revealing the remarkable growth and evolution of this centuries-old practice.
