Episode description and notes
What connects music, mathematics, and the way we experience sound? In this episode of Music 101, Daniel Lucas welcomes Mr. Kurt Ellenberger, composer, author, former professional pianist, and professor at Grand Valley State University, where he teaches music in the Honors College. Under the theme “Hearing Math and Seeing Sound: The Mystery of Music and Evolution,” the conversation explores music through the perspective of someone whose life has been shaped by performing, composing, and teaching. Kurt shares how his musical journey began at age 12 or 13, when he heard Duke Ellington’s jazz and Gustav Holst’s classical music on NPR in Detroit. That early fascination inspired years of dedicated practice. By 17 or 18, he was working professionally in the Detroit area, beginning a performing career that lasted about a decade before he returned to school and became a music professor. Join Daniel and Kurt for a conversation about musical discovery, creative curiosity, and the journey from captivated listener to professional musician and educator. Listen closely.
